September 10, 2005: Summer EngagementsWhile some members of the band have been enjoying their summer holidays, others have been busy performing at a number of engagements over the past few weeks. The Scottish Mining Museum at Newtongrange held their annual Open Day on Sunday 31st July, and the band were invited to go along and provide some musical entertainment during the early part of the afternoon. Playing at the entrance to the museum grounds on a pleasantly mild day, the band's performance was appreciated by those members of the public who forsook the beach for the museum. The following Saturday, August 6th, the band took part in the parade at the annual Dalkeith Festival, marching from the bottom of Dalkeith High Street to King's Park. As usual, the event was well attended by the people of Dalkeith. Sunday August 21st was the day for Pipefest 2005 at Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, and some players from St. David's Brass participated in one of the `massed' brass bands at the event. The crowds lining the parade route certainly seemed to enjoy the day, as well as the brass music - possibly as a break from pipe bands! The massed band finale, with over 9,000 musicians (mainly pipers) taking part, was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Hopefully... Finally, the Scottish Mining Museum commemorate their 21st anniversary this year, and on August 26th and September 8th a small group from the band offered a musical welcome to those arriving at celebratory functions at the museum.
August 31, 2005: Band Sabbaticals and VacanciesThis month sees Lauren O'Neill, the band's Bumper Up cornet player move across the water to Ireland for a year for work commitments. She has been a valued member of the cornet section for many years now and will be sorely missed but she informs the band that she will make fleeting appearances at concerts and contests wherever possible. Also last month saw the temporary departure of the band's Bass Trombonist, Neil Kettles, on a years trip to Canada. Neil joined the band many years ago on Solo Trombone before moving to grace the Bass Trombone chair. Finally, Dave Wrench the band's Repiano cornet player has moved back down south to take up work commitments after a successful period with the band. The band would like to wish all three of the players all the best in their ventures and invite them all back at any time. Vacancies The band now has a number of vacancies in several positions. These vacancies are listed in a section of our message board here. If you are interested in applying for one of these, please post in the relevant topic or register your interest by contacting us.
